We are the exclusive European Agents for Thompson Creek for Rhenium Metal Pellets and APR from their Langeloth, USA facility
Rhenium is a silvery-white, heavy metal that takes its name from the Latin for the river Rhine. It is one of the rarest elements in the earth's crust at an estimated 1 part per billion, and is extracted commercially from Molybdenum flue-roaster gases from copper sulphide ores. Total world production is estimated at 40-50 tonnes per annum, and recycling plays an important part in the market.
Rhenium has two major industrial applications:-
1) In solid metallic form, Rhenium is alloyed at 3-10% in the latest generation of single crystal (SC), directionally solidified (DS) and equiaxed nickel based superalloys that are used in blade and vane castings for aero engine and land-based industrial gas turbines applications (approx 70% of global consumption) Rhenium imparts enhanced creep resistance properties to the alloy, thereby allowing longer, leaner burning and improving fuel efficiency. Avon has succesfully approved several sources of Rhenium into major investment casters around the world. Mo-Re and W-Re alloys are used in thermocouples.
2) In the form of Ammonium Perrhenate (APR), which is approximately 69.4% Rhenium, it is used in reforming catalysts in the production of high octane petroleum additives, and as a promoter in catalysts in gas-to-liquid (GTL) operations which are forecast to grow in the long term due to the expansion of shale gas output. APR is also used as a pre-cursor to Rhenium metal powder via Hydrogen reduction and metallic pellets via pressing and sintering.
Avon Specialty Metal is one of the World's largest traders of Rhenium.
We handle the following Rhenium products: -
